A useful discipline, acoustical engineering helps control noise and vibration, but it also looks at useful noise such as sonar, ultrasound and reproducing sound for various purposes. Acoustical engineering is not just for the recording studio, but is used in medicine, the military, marine biology and just about any other science.

Controlling Noise with Soundproofing Material

The first application for acoustic engineering is probably the most obvious. It is used to control vibrations and noise in home theatres or recording studios. Soundproofing material for these purposes may include insulations, foams or even sound proof windows.

Insulation works to absorb sound, as do the foam panels that surround a room used for recording sound. Often all of the surfaces in a studio that could impact sound are covered in the material. This includes the walls, ceiling and even large, flat pieces of furniture may be covered. Acoustical foam is often bumpy like an egg crate to further reduce the vibrations.

Sound Reproduction

Also used in musical applications, sound reproduction lets exact sound be duplicated and recorded. Acoustical technology allows for isolating sounds as well. It is a science that can be seen in forensic investigations to isolate background noise and determine facts that can solve mysteries.

Ultra Sound

Sometimes there are good noises that are captured and recorded with the science behind acoustical engineering. Ultrasound is one such use. Through ultrasound, noise is able to measure the size and shape of objects that cannot be seen. It is used for determining the outlines of an unborn baby and the size and shape of possible tumours. Such uses can detect very early the growth and changes that can save lives.

Sonar

The military uses sonar technology to detect aircraft or sea vessels long before they come into view. It is used in the air traffic control around the world to safely land and navigate thousands of flights each day. Sonar also helps track the comings and goings of sharks and other marine life. This information can save animals and humans alike.

As you can see there are many uses for the study of acoustics. There is sound proofing and isolation. There is ultrasound and sonar. Each home or medical or military use makes more valuable the study to acoustical engineering.
