How to get sound isolation

Sound isolation is achieved when sounds from one source are contained in a specified area. Why would someone want sound isolation? There are many reasons and many ways to go about controlling the sounds and noises entering or escaping your environment.

Types of floor sound insulation

The floor is one place in a home where sound can escape from one room to the next, especially the rooms below the floor. Good sound insulations are available in board form and are installed between layers of the floor. These boards create enclosures of empty spaces between floors and provide good sound isolation. In addition, the insulators act as good moisture barriers to further protect finished floors and reduce noise.

Acoustical Reasons for Sound Isolation

One of the most common reasons to keep sound enclosed is for good acoustics. Acoustics refers to the amount of noise that is deflected back from surfaces into the environment. For example, a room may have good acoustics if it doesn’t allow for echoing, but lets sound come across from the source to your ears in a clear, unchanged manner.

In homes and theatres, acoustics are both important. In a home, the type of sound isolation you have between rooms and floors can mean the difference between hearing the base tones of the family room television set in the master bedroom or not. It can also contain sound from stereo systems in home theatres or help reduce echoing in large open foyers or other high ceiling areas. This becomes especially necessary in rooms with high ceilings and hard flooring since there are few soft surfaces to capture the sound and keep it from bouncing from wall to wall.

A public theatre also requires good acoustics in order for words and music from loud volume productions to not become distorted before reaching the ears of the audience. There are theatres that are designed so effectively to isolate sound that no microphones or public address systems are needed for the audience to hear clearly the soft words spoken from the stage or even the drop of pin against a hard surface. Wooden panels are primarily used in this type of setting to create effective sound isolation.
