Methods of soundproofing a room

What is the best way of soundproofing a room? It depends on a few factors related to the use of the room and whether or not the house already exists or is under construction. For soundproofing a room, you will first want to ask yourself a few questions:

1. Does the room need to be completely soundproof or just have a reduction in noise?

2. In the room open to the outdoors or centered in the building?

3. Is this a renovation or new construction?

4. How much can I spend on the soundproofing?

Room or Complete House Soundproofing

The first question will determine the measures you will take to soundproof the room. If the noise just needs to be reduced, often wall and floor insulations for weather will do the job. However, for complete soundproofing, specific floor sound insulation that is greater in density is necessary. Also, in answer to question number two, if the room is exposed to the outdoors and needs to be completely soundproof, that could be difficult. Special soundproof windows, which are installed directly over existing windows, can reduce noise by up to 90 percent. This does not change the function or appearance of the room but greatly reduces noise.

If sound proofing a room is going to occur in a new construction, then rubber insulation material and windows can be part of the new construction. To soundproof an existing room for relatively low cost, then acoustical foam that comes in panels can be placed on walls and the ceiling. These are designed to absorb sound so that it doe not “leak” out into other areas of the house. It also keeps household noises from entering into the soundproofed space.

Foam or board type panels are effective in controlling sound absorption or reflection. These are relatively inexpensive and can help control noise from seeping out of a room as well as echo within a room. However, installing foam or fibreglass insulation in between walls, ceilings and floors is really the only way to effectively and completely accomplish soundproofing a room.
